The purpose of the Music Committee at CCUU is to support the music director in providing music for worship services and other CCUU-sponsored activities—music that reflects and promotes our UU principles and values; that encourages diversity of culture, religion, age, gender, and sexual orientation; and that plays an important role in inter-generational cooperation and community outreach. The Music Committee helps the music director plan and implement Countryside’s music program. During monthly meetings we share ideas, plan new programs, monitor progress toward goals, and help with the budgeting process. We believe that music is a tie that binds us to each other, to the worship experience and to our UU heritage and values. This mission guides our development of current and new music programming. Some of the special events and activities that the Music Committee has sponsored or co-sponsored have included….

Hymn Sings – At least once a year, we gather congregation members and friends to sing through hymns from our hymnal (Singing the Living Tradition) and our supplement (Singing the Journey). We learn some new hymns as well as cover some of our favorites. A potluck meal is always part of our hymn sing experience.

Resonate Singing Meditation
– Singing Meditation is an interfaith spiritual practice in which sound and silence are alternated. This is not a rehearsal for a performance. This is singing for the purpose of facilitating your connection with God, the Divine, your own Inner Core of guidance, the Spirit of Life. Singing Meditation includes toning, chanting, singing in rounds and singing in harmony. The repertoire is drawn from a variety of religious traditions.

Christmas Caroling Party – Each December the committee hosts a gathering to sing through a variety of Christmas carols, songs, and hymns. The evening includes both sacred and secular singing. Participants are encouraged to bring guitars and their favorite holiday songs to share with the group.

Music RE
– Music Committee has worked with our RE and Study Ministry to create “mUUsic ExpeRiEnce” for our CCUU youth during the winter months. These classes are themed together and support the objectives of the RE program through the use of musical elements of song, rhythm, and movement.

Movies with Meaning
– Music Committee has co-sponsored some movies for the Adult Faith Development program including “Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen” and “El Sistema”.

Music with a Mission – Music Committee works with the Service Ministry and Outreach Steering Committee to produce Countryside’s Music with a Mission Fundraising event each March. Check out the Outreach Steering Committee’s page for more information on this event. Music Committee has also coordinated music for CCUU’s annual Time and Talent fund raiser.

Cultural Outings – Music Committee has sponsored numerous cultural outings around Chicagoland for all congregation members and guests. Outings have included trips to hear the Grant Park Chorus, Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia, Belle Voce, and A Cappella.
